The Sonos Arc is a bigger soundbar, suited to TVs of 55 inches and above, and is very much a home cinema bar, packing in 11 speakers, including some upfiring drivers for real Dolby Atmos. It's not as cinematic as the Sony HT-G700, but the smart speaker features and excellent music streaming (and playback quality) make it a truly superb choice, and it's more compact.

You can even turn it into a full wireless surround system later by adding more Sonos speakers to the room, but you can start with just this well-priced soundbar. The Sonos Beam is our pick for the soundbar that most people with small TVs should probably go for – it's an ideal mix of powerful and clean sound, subtle and chic looks in black or white, and smart features including multi-room music playback and microphones for Amazon Alexa/Google Assistant. Basically, if you want a big cinematic sound for the least money, this is the one to go for. It uses the digital processing magic to create a sound with true width and height, despite being just a small soundbar with stereo drivers. The Sony HT-X8500 is maybe the single best budget soundbar buy right now. It's not cheap, but it's a glorious single-soundbar system for truly cinematic sound. The Sony HT-ST5000 is a more elite example of this – it does an excellent job of creating virtual surround sound from a single bar (plus subwoofer), including Dolby Atmos height channels. The Sony HT-G700 uses this to create a surprisingly convincing wall of Dolby Atmos sound from its 3.1-channel system, and as a result is one of the best-value Atmos soundbars on the market, and gets a strong recommendation in our Sony HT-G700 review. It has a sleek design and surprisingly good bass for a soundbar that doesn't come with a subwoofer in tow.Sony always uses some of the most technically impressive audio processing in its products, helping them produce sound that seems to come from devices that should be much larger and more expensive – perfect for something like soundbars, where you don't want them to be too tall. The Vizio M-Series 2.1 for $150 : This is a great entry-level soundbar if you don't have much to spend. We have also heard complaints about issues with the wireless functionality. The Bose Smart Soundbar 700 for $799 : If you want a premium bar that has great sound and can be expanded with satellite speakers, but aren't a fan of Sonos, Bose has you covered-though you might not like the $799 price tag.

It's a good-sounding bar and that gimmick is neat, but there are better options for under $1,000. The Vizio Elevate for $950: This is an awesome-looking soundbar with side speakers that swivel skyward when you're watching content with object-based audio.

The Alexa-enabled soundbar can be bought standalone, with surround speakers and subwoofers available from Polk if you want to upgrade your sound. The Polk React for $249 : This soundbar works if you want surround sound eventually but don't have the cash right now. It comes with a wireless subwoofer and can be upgraded with LG-made surround speakers. The LG SP9YA for $697 : This is a good Atmos bar for smaller rooms. Here are some others you might want to consider. There are a lot of great soundbars out there, and we don't have room to feature them all. Inputs: 3 HDMI ports (one ARC), optical, RCA, Bluetooth, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Google Chromecast built in Much as LG, Samsung, and Sony use exceptional image quality to convince people to shell out thousands of dollars for their flagship televisions, Sennheiser can bank on the Ambeo's superior audio to attract discerning buyers. It’s not for the budget-conscious, but this is the crème de la crème of compact home theater audio.

It doesn't matter if you're watching Netflix Originals or listening to your favorite music, the Ambeo just offers rich, detailed sound. It's the best-sounding bar we’ve ever heard. At times, it sounds so good you might think there are little tiny speakers flying around your room. Even without the addition of satellite speakers for surround, the Ambeo uses its tech to throw sound around your space with full Dolby Atmos immersion. The company’s massive-and massively expensive-Ambeo showcases some of the most advanced processing and audio quality we’ve ever heard from a single bar. The acclaimed audio brand Sennheiser waited decades to launch its first home soundbar.
